Oslo Encounters: Unexpected Connections and City Exploration (October 2016)
Ah, the magic of travel! My whirlwind October trip to Oslo in 2016 took an even more unexpected turn on the bus ride from the airport towards the train station. There, fate intervened, and I met a kindred spirit – fellow photographer Mikko Marjalaakso (@mikkomarja) from Finland, traveling with his daughter Helmi. As avid adventurers themselves, we instantly connected, and our planned solitary exploration of Oslo transformed into a collaborative adventure.
Imagine this: stepping off the bus with camera bags slung over our shoulders, a crisp October breeze in the air, and the excitement of a new friendship blossoming. Mikko, Helmi, and I immediately struck up a conversation, our shared passion for photography creating an instant bond. We learned that Mikko was a seasoned photographer, his daughter Helmi a budding traveler herself! Our solo exploration plans were instantly replaced with a thrilling prospect – discovering Oslo together.
The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet remained my first stop, and this time, the experience was even more enriching. Mikko, with his experienced eye, offered valuable insights into the building’s architecture, while Helmi’s youthful enthusiasm was contagious. We climbed the Opera House’s sloping roof together, capturing breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Oslofjord, all the while sharing photography tips and techniques. The iconic “She Lies” sculpture in Bjørvika harbor sparked lively discussions about symbolism and artistic expression.
Inside the Opera House, the interplay of light and form took on a new dimension with Mikko’s guidance. He pointed out details I might have missed, and together we captured stunning images of the vast windows and the undulating wood walls bathed in the warm October sunlight. Helmi, meanwhile, experimented with different angles and perspectives, her creativity a joy to witness.
Our walk along the harbor was equally enriching. The Nobel Peace Center’s sleek facade held a deeper meaning after Mikko shared its history. The nearby memorial dedicated to the deported Jews of Norway became even more poignant as we reflected together on its significance. The rows of empty chairs standing silently in the field resonated deeply with all of us.
After this introspective pause, it was time to refuel. “Burger Joint” remained the undisputed champion, and the delicious burgers fueled our continued exploration. As we devoured them, we marveled at Oslo’s unique blend of architectural styles, sharing our favorite spots and hidden gems. The contrast between sleek, modern buildings and charming old structures offered a visual feast at every turn.
My 24 hours in Oslo were originally planned as a solo adventure, but thanks to a chance encounter on a bus, they became an unforgettable experience filled with camaraderie and shared discovery. The city’s artistic spirit, its historical depth, and the beautiful marriage of modern and traditional architecture all came together to create a lasting memory, forever intertwined with the new friendship I forged with Mikko and Helmi. If you’re ever traveling solo, remember to stay open to unexpected connections – they might just lead to the most rewarding experiences of your trip!
